Climbing higher

We have a rigorous programme of lesson observations at The Bushey Academy, to ensure students are making progress in all lessons at all times. One of my senior colleagues this week reported how much he had enjoyed observing a Year 10 PE lesson on the climbing wall. Working in pairs and small groups, the students looked at images of themselves on the wall last week, and were then able to identify good technique, and set a new achievement target for the lesson. They were utterly engrossed throughout, observing and encouraging each other, and focused on overcoming the high level of personal challenge on the wall. Although it is particularly easy to see in lessons such as this, it is this type of opportunity students have here that have led to such rapid progress in the whole academy over recent years.

The safety and security of our community is always a key concern for us, so it was great to be officially recognised in this capacity by 'Safetymark' who recently confirmed our award for safety excellence in schools. They examine aspects of our building, site, procedures and leadership, and it was reassuring for us to receive such glowing feedback. I am sure it is equally important to you.

Other awards this week included the reception for our SSAT Award, that I was pleased to collect in person at Holland Park School. I mentioned this before when I first heard the news of our recognition in the top 20% of schools nationwide.

I am pleased to report further success from a member of our Sixth Form, who in November 2013 applied to be a volunteer at the Olympic Games in Rio de Janiero in 2016. She mentioned her school success in BTEC Sport and achievements with the Harrow Athletics Club in the application. Yesterday was her final interview via Skype, and I am delighted to report that she will be part of this group next year.
