We start this half-term as we intend to go on; with sporting
successes, charity fundraising, academic rigour and community spirit.
Year 11 have spent time with the English Department this
week in a focused drive to raise their attainment in preparation for the summer.
Their teachers have been impressed with their drive, commitment and overall
approach to the additional interventions as we start the countdown to their
exam in May.
The Year 7 and 8 boys had a great deal of success at Watford
Rugby Club, with the Year 7 team winning impressively and the Year 8 students
being placed in the top three schools, and drawing the attention of
professional Rugby Union coaches who commented on the team’s commitment to
tackles and enthusiasm for the game. The coaches were so impressed that they
have offered to deliver coaching sessions at the academy in the near future.
Whittle’s charity campaign is well underway. They started
this week by selling Crispy Crème Doughnuts at break and lunch times, making
for a very enjoyable Friday treat. The House Captains were able to raise over
£100 towards our chosen charities.
After a hugely exciting Maths Week, culminating in the
revealing of the identity of the evil genius – The Square Root of all Evil - the academy community is gearing up for
Reading Week. This launches on Thursday 6th March with an author
visit by esteemed writer and celebrated football journalist Dan Freedman,
famous for interviewing the likes of Messi and Ronaldo. The English department will
be providing a range of challenges for pupils to complete with their forms as
well as launching the very first ‘Writer of the Year’ award open to students of
all ages.
All this in one week! I look forward to the rest of the
term.
